Graduate Assistantships The opera program and the Hugh Hodgson School of Music offers scholarships to graduates in each of the voice categories: soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, baritone and bass. These selected Graduate Assistants receive a full tuition waiver from the university plus a living stipend in the amount of approximately $10,000 per academic year of their studies, two years for Masters and three years for DMAs. For Opera Graduate Assistants, there is usually only one singer in each category and that singer is assigned to one of leading roles in each opera production. Graduates from all voice studios are able to audition for any solo role of their chosen too. The opera department also offers a Graduate Assistantship to one qualified collaborative pianist who is supervised by and works closely with our Opera Coach studying each opera being prepared, playing rehearsals, coaching singers on music and diction, coaching various other operas to advance their knowledge and coaching techniques and is the collaborative pianist for all opera performance events. Additional funding for the Graduate Assistants is possible through a generous endowment created by Dr. Carl S. Hoveland called the Patricia and Carl S. Hoveland Fellowship for Opera. Each year, depending on the amount of usable funds available, selected graduates may receive up to an additional $2500.00 per year. Young Artist Program For both graduates and undergraduate opera students there is an annual opportunity to receive a varying amount of award funding for those singers who have been selected through world-wide Young Artist Program auditions and who will be attending one of these summer opera programs for advanced professional training. These funds are made possible through the generous donations and support of the Friends of the Opera group who wish to contribute to the opera program and the advancement of all potential future opera singers.
